Dirkey Migration Guide Back to Index

Info
Dirkey 1.x to 2.0 Upgrade Guide
===============================

Installation
------------
You can install Dirkey 2.0 next to Dirkey 1.x. Although possible, it
is not recommended that you install Dirkey 2.0 in the same folder as
Dirkey 1.x. After installation the new version is started
automatically, but you will still be able to use Dirkey 1.x by
shutting down Dirkey 2.0 first (Dirkey 1.x and 2.0 cannot run
simultaneously). If you are sure that you want to stick with Dirkey
2.0 then you may decide to uninstall Dirkey 1.x by running its
Uninstall application. This will not affect Dirkey 2.0 at all.

Settings & Bookmarks
--------------------
Dirkey 2.0 will not use the settings of Dirkey 1.x nor will it import
the bookmarks of Dirkey 1.x. It is highly recommended that you stick
with the default settings of Dirkey 2.0 until you are familiar with
the new functionality. Important note: the Automatically start on
Windows startup option is mutually exclusive for Dirkey 1.x and 2.0.
This means that if you enable it for version 2.0 it will be disabled
automatically for 1.x and vice versa.

Bookmarks
---------
You cannot import bookmarks from Dirkey 1.x to Dirkey 2 automatically.
You either have to re-add all your favorite bookmarks manually or you
can follow these next steps to make the process somewhat easier:
- Shut down Dirkey 2 (if running).
- Start Windows Notepad (or some other text editor).
- Start Dirkey 1.x.
- Go to the Dirkey Main Window (double click the Dirkey tray icon).
- Highlight a bookmark in Dirkey and press Ctrl+C.
- Go to Notepad and press Ctrl+V and Enter.
- Repeat this for all bookmarks until you have a list of all
  bookmarks in Notepad.
- Shut down Dirkey 1.x.
- Start Dirkey 2.
- Go to the Bookmarks dialog (double click the Dirkey tray icon).
- Select the whole list of bookmarks in Notepad and press Ctrl+C.
- Set the focus to Dirkey, right-click the bookmarks list and select
  "Paste As New".

Important Feature Changes
-------------------------
This is just a small summary of features/changes that may confuse you
if you previously used Dirkey 1.x. See history.txt for a complete list
of changes and new features in Dirkey 2.0.

* Dirkey 2 no longer uses fixed slots for storing bookmarks but a
dynamic list instead. This means that any number of folders can be
added to the list. Initially the list is empty, you can use the
"Add" command/button to add new bookmarks. It is still possible to
replace bookmarks by new ones (like the "Set" command in Dirkey 1.x)
the name for this action is now "Replace".

* The default hotkey for showing the Bookmarks Dialog locally
(previously the Select Bookmark dialog) has been changed from
Ctrl+0 to Ctrl+Minus (the key next to the 0 key on most keyboards).
The key for showing the Bookmarks Dialog globally (previously the
Main Window) has been changed from Ctrl+Alt+0 to Ctrl+Alt+Minus.
Ctrl+(Alt+)0 can now be assigned to bookmarks just like
  Ctrl+(Alt+)1..9.

* The hotkeys Ctrl+(Alt+)0..9 will now always add the current folder
as a new bookmark and associate the indicated hotkey with it. The
bookmark that previously used this hotkey will not be removed as
was the case with Dirkey 1.x.

* The shortcut key for showing the Bookmarks Dialog globally
(previously the Main Window) is now a global hotkey. This means that
you can use it anywhere in Windows no matter what the current
foreground application is. Additionally this hotkey is now fully
customizable, the default setting is Ctrl+Alt+Minus.
